How would you feel if you are put in a small room of about 10′ x 10′ with 10 other people? How would you feel if you have to spend a few days or weeks in there with all those people, only to be taken away from there and put in another 10′ x 10′ room? What would your reaction be if you saw people being locked up in a small room and kept there to be transported to another place? What would your reaction be if you saw people being locked in small cages as exhibition?
Why then do we do the same with animals?
Today, I was at a distribution center which supplies fish to pet stores that sell fish. I felt really sorry for the fish. These colorful free creatures that are supposed to be swimming freely in the great waters were kept in fish tanks about 1′ x 2′ in size, hundreds of them. Of course we justify that they are provided with food and fresh oxygenated water, etc. We also justify that the end buyer, who will keep these animals as pets will take good care of them. We even have the arrogance to justify that these fish do not really need large spaces.
Would you do the same justification if there came a superior species from another planet and caged you into small confined spaces for exhibition or as their pets, fed you regularly, but you cannot leave that confined space? Would you like it? How would you feel if you are treated like a commodity? How would you feel if you are labeled as a SKU(stock keeping unit), based on your size, color, type, etc?
Why then do we do the same with animals? Why then do we allow people to treat animals like a commodity? WHY?
I know, you will read this, think for few seconds and forgot about it and go about your merry old way.
If you are not ready to change, don’t expect the world to change for you.
